The park has a relaxed atmosphere and is easy to get to for safe and exciting water fun, catering for all ages and skill levels.

Backpaddock Lakes is one of only a few commercial water parks in New Zealand offering two cable systems. With beginner and advanced courses specifically designed for wakeboarding. Riders ride in a safe and fun environment. Our Cable Lake system is a great place for kids wanting to learn to wakeboard and waterski as well as adults. In a nutshell, wakeboarding at Backpaddocks Lakes caters for all ages and all skill levels. There are no intimidating wakes from boats and our system has fully adjustable speeds operated by experienced instructors, so you can ride comfortably at your own pace.

Get On a Board & Ride

Wakeboarding is often associated with the high costs of owning and running a boat. But our cable wakeboarding systems on a dedicated tailor-made lake, bring this exciting sport to those who’d never previously had the opportunity. We offer cable wakeboarding for schools and groups, private bookings and also those who just want to rock up and ride!

How Our Cable Park Works

Overhead pulleys and cables with wakeboard ropes and handles attached tow riders along. We have helmets available for hire that have two-way radios so riders can communicate with instructors for on the spot coaching and providing quicker results and a peace-of-mind for parents and the less confident.

School Groups Wakeboarding

Cable wakeboarding is a real hit with the kids and can be booked as a stand-alone experience for school groups or as an add-on with other activities on and off the water. With our two cable systems students can choose to ride on the beginner cable or for the more experienced young daredevils, on the advanced cable course.*

*Up to 50 children can be coached and ride on Cable Lake throughout the day, conditions apply.


Our main Lake measures 760m long and 100-180m wide. The lake has a concrete boat ramp and a world-class waterskiing slalom course. The lake also caters for sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding.

Season Boating Pass

At Backpaddock Lakes we offer an season boating membership for unlimited access to the Main Lake when it’s not being used for other events or private functions. Your pass means you can come and go with use of the waterski slalom course and other facilities. Your membership also includes the joining fee to be a CHB Waterski and Wakeboard Club. However, these memberships are limited, so be in quick!

Backpaddock Lake’s Main Lake was designed for all levels of waterskiing. The world-class slalom course attracts waterskiers from all over New Zealand and beyond. In order to waterski on the Main Lake an season membership or 2-day pass is required.

Our Main Lake is perfect for optimist yachting, paddleboarding and kayaking. We offer a freshwater environment and the safety of a man-made lake in beautiful surrounds. We also have our own flotilla of optimist yachts, a quiver of kayaks, life jackets, a small tender boat and all other required gear.

Along with all the equipment for sailing and kayaking we also have trained staff to coach and support young people. The clean fresh water, grass lawns and walking access around the entire lake makes Backpaddock Lakes a very safe and user friendly environment for young yachties and aspiring Olympic kayakers.


At Backpaddock Lakes we cater for schools and groups such as work parties and clubs. Why not change things up with a full fun day of cable wakeboarding, optimist yachting and kayaking? We offer some great packages to give your group an experience to remember with larger bookings having exclusive use of the lakes and facilities for an entire day!*

*For school groups / minors, there are specific staffing requirements / ratios of adults to children.


All equipment is available for hire at Backpaddock Lakes, so all you need to bring is your togs (or wetsuit) and a towel. We have event and function booking options available for small or large groups and we can also take care of all your catering during your visit. Our summer season runs from Labour Weekend until Easter.


The majestic and forever-changing Ruahine Range acts as the perfect backdrop for our lovely lakes. The native wetlands are constantly changing through the seasons and provide a peaceful retreat from the busy activities on our two water sports lakes.

Our dedicated native wetland area is approximately two hectares and includes seven islands made up of channels and open water separated by native plantings and local wildlife. The wildlife is unperturbed by activities on the lake with the area frequented by the Kōtuku (White Heron).
